The Value of Data Quality in Healthcare

July 7, 2023

In the world of healthcare, data is king.

With the amount of information that healthcare providers collect on a daily basis, it can become overwhelming and it’s no wonder that many organizations seek ways to refine the patient data captured in electronic health records to provide the best care possible.HCA Healthcare, one of the leading providers of care, is no exception.

Thanks to dedication and investments into initiatives to enhance data quality, HCA has been able to improve patient safety and emergency preparedness across its entire organization. Dr. Jim Jirjis, Chief Health Information Officer with HCA Healthcare, recently sat down with Healthcare IT Today to discuss the value ofdata quality in healthcare, the role it played in HCA’s innovative sepsis detection project and one unanticipated benefit of implementing a data quality improvement plan.

“For us, it was really important to find a partner that had experience with mapping the entire laboratory domain,” said Dr. Jirjis. “There are companies out there like Clinical Architecture that are able to automate 90% of that mapping so you don’t have to do it one map at a time.”

Because they partnered with Clinical Architecture, HCA was able to streamline its data management processes and effectively leverage the data it was collecting to improve patient outcomes. For example, the sepsis detection algorithm that HCA implemented could only work because the organization had invested in solutions to refine data quality. As a result, hospital leadership discovered that it could also use this fully mapped data to react faster to emergency situations and save valuable time.

The importance ofdata quality in healthcarecannot be overstated. It is a strategic imperative that can help healthcare organizations stay ahead of the curve in an ever-evolving healthcare landscape. Clinical Architecture is proud to provide data solutions for healthcare organizations like HCA. We work with many of the largest hospital enterprises, life sciences, governmental agencies, academia and analytics providers to efficiently standardize and normalize data and refine it for interoperable information exchange, analytics and research. The example shared by Dr. Jim Jirjis is one way that improved data quality contributes to better patient outcomes.
